Trupanion Description
Trupanion was first known as Vetinsurance up in Canada in 1999 and became available in the US in January of 2008. Trupanion’s headquarters are located in Seattle, Washington.

Sign up:
- Trupanion pet insurance enrolls both dogs and cats of any breed, between 8 weeks old and 14 years old.
Cons:
- Before you activate a policy, your pet must undergo a complete veterinary exam which is not paid by the insurance company
Cost:
- Price averages around $25.39 to $47.24, depending on your pet’s age, with a $500 per incident deductible.
- Your monthly premiums are lowered if you select a higher deductible.
Pros:
- Trupanion pet insurance does not increase your premiums as you pet ages.
Cons:
- The deductible is flexible and can be between $0 and $1,000 per incident. You are allowed to change your deductible without any penalties.
- Premiums do increase due to the inflationary cost of veterinary medicine in your area.
- Trupanion does not offer multiple pet discounts.
Coverage:
- Trupanion reimburses 90% of the cost of your covered claims.
- Any conditions that were identified earlier than two weeks after signing up with Trupanion pet insurance are considered pre-existing, and any claims associated with them will not be covered. Once a pre-existing condition is identified, any future claims for that condition will not be covered, for the next 6 months to 10 years.
- There is a $20,000 limit over the life of your pet, with no limits per year, claim, illness, procedure, or condition.
- Any licensed veterinarian, 24 hour emergency centers and referral specialists, in the US or while temporarily in Canada are covered by Trupanion.
Pros:
- With Trupanion pet insurance all conditions are covered for life (or until you cancel) unless they were pre-existing at the time of sign up.
- Chronic, hereditary, and congenital disorders are covered 90%.
- You are allowed to add Hip dysplasia coverage up to 30 days after policy effective date for pets enrolled before their first birthdays only.
Cons:
- Preventive care is not covered.
Claims:
- Trupanion pet insurance processes initial claims in up to 7 days. All claims average 24 hour processing time.
- Claims must be submitted via fax or mail up to 90 days after the date of treatment.
- Your premiums will not increase based on the number of claims you submit.
- Trupanion help is available 24 hours, 7 days a week.
Cancelling:
- You can cancel anytime.
Pros:
- Trupanion offers a 30 money-back guarantee, if you have not made a claim.
