PetFirst Healthcare started operating in July 2004 and is headquartered in Jeffersonville, Indiana. It is privately held and owner operated. PetFirst provides pet insurance in all 50 states, popular for its simple coverage with no per diagnosis limits, no premium increases based on age, breed or location. They are one of the pet insurance companies which provides multiple pet owner discounts.

Sign up:

- PetFirst insures only cats and dogs older than 8 weeks.
- The first two weeks after you sign up are considered a waiting period and any condition which occurs during this period will be considered pre-existing.

Cost:

- Deductibles are between $50 and $100 per incident.

Coverage:

- There are coverage limits of $2000 to $15000 per year, $1500 to $3500 per incident and $0 to $220 for routine care.
- Between 80% and 100% of your qualifying veterinary expenses will be reimbursed.
- You are free to use any licensed veterinarian.
- Pre-existing conditions are not covered. Per-existing is considered any condition which occurred before the effective date of your policy. The effective date is renewed every year when you renew your policy!
Pros:
- Teeth and eye conditions are covered if they occurred due to an accident. Baby teeth extractions are excluded.
- Medications and prescription drugs are covered.
- Cancer treatment is covered except when cancer resulted from a pre-existing condition.
Cons:
- Cosmetic or preventative surgeries are excluded.

Claims:

- Claims need to be mailed to PetFirst Healthcare up to 90 days after the incident.
- Processing takes up to 10 business days.
- For you first claim, PetFirst Healthcare requires 12 months of medical records to be submitted along with the rest of the files.

Cancelling:

- All cancellation requests need to be put in writing and faxed or mailed to PetFirst.
- Coverage is not denied after your pet reaches a certain age.
